Sports Festival at Wartburg

The Wartburg Kirchdorf School, some 30 km from Pietermaritzburg, is holding a big rugby hockey and netball festival at the Midlands school on Saturday, 9 March 2014.

The stated aim of the festival is to 'provide small to medium schools to engage in preseason 'friendly' matches against schools they do not normally play against.

'The emphasis is on sporting friendly competition and camaraderie. There are no prizes, no trophies, no Needle.'

The motto of the school, Dennoch Fest und Frei (Still firm and free) is in German which tells something of the origin of the school. German settlers came to the Midlands in the middle of the 19th century and founded a school there in 1881. Their school, Kirchdorf, joined with Wartburg school in 1931, a coed school from primary to matric, of some 450 pupils. Their rugby is enthusiastic.
