St Andrew's lose in the wet
The St Andrew's College First XV played Framesby on Saturday, 17 March on a wet and slippery Somerset Field at the Graeme College Rugby Day. Framesby won 16-6.
It was a tough assignment against a strong and highly rated Framesby outfit, but St Andrew's started well, putting the opposition under early pressure and creating some chances for points before Josh Devis slotted a penalty to put College in the lead 3-0.
Off the restart St Andrew's made some typical early-season errors and put themselves under pressure. They defended bravely for a long period before finally conceding in the corner. The team bounced back immediately and forced another penalty that was converted by Devis to go into the break 6-5 up.
The second half saw St Andrew's College play into an ever-stiffening wind and with the Framesby flyhalf now beginning to dictate play with his boot the team struggled to get out of their own half. College defended bravely but conceded another try as well as two penalties as the pressure mounted. The first side kept battling bravely and certainly created opportunities to score, but failed to capitalise on any of these and in the end going down 6-16.
It was not all doom and gloom for the College team who showed a lot of character on defence as well as some very encouraging signs on attack. With a bit more ball and time to prepare, we will see this College side only going from strength to strength.
