Tough Task for Wynberg

The school takes its founding date as 1841 though there was a school founded in Wynberg even earlier. That means that the school was founded just 46 years after the British first invaded the Cape and established a military base in Wynberg, which is still there.

This Saturday, Wynberg have a tough foe to conquer, for powerful Paarl Boys' High are coming to do battle on the rugby fields of Wynberg.

The battle between the Southern Suburbs schools and the "country" schools of Paarl and Stellenbosch has been dominated by the country schools and if anything the gap has been growing wider.

This year Paarl Boys' High are unbeaten and ranked second on the Top 20. They have beaten Die Brandwag of Uitenhage, Helpmekaar, Nelspruit, Outeniqua and, last week, Bishops. Three of their opponents are Top 20 schools.

Wynberg have beaten Westville, St Alban's and Tygerberg, drawn with Michaelhouse and were well beaten by Rondebosch.

The odds are heavily in Boys' High's favour. The weather may yet be Wynberg's saviour as heavy rain is forecast for the Peninsula on Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. The Hawthornden field at Wynberg is low-lying and could well be wet and heavy.
