Welkom Gim win again

Welkom Gimnasium had not too much trouble in securing their place in the knock-out stages of the Griffons League and also beating arch-rivals Goudveld 35-15 in their FNB Classic Clash in the process.

Their fullback Francois Kuipers was in outstanding form. He threatened Gouties defensive line every time he touched the ball.

Gimmies led 14-3 at the break.

Their centre, Louwrens Koekemoer played in his 50th league match for his school's first XV.  He and the scrumhalf Kerr Till also produced exceptional performances among the backs, while flyhalf JL Carry-Smith impressed with his tactical kicking. Till scored 15 of Gimmies points via his trusty boot. He slotted three conversions and was also successful with three penalty goals.

In the forwards, hooker Brummer Marais was outstanding. He and the flank Retief Marais were, as always, stalwarts in the line-outs as well. Marais is the younger brother of Peet and Jandré Marais who plays for the Sharks. Retief will also pursue a career in rugby at the Sharks from next year.

The flyhalf of Goudveld, Shaun Reynolds equalised the point-scoring record for a single Craven Week tournament when he scored 57 points at the 50th Coca-Cola Cravenweek in Polokwane earlier this year. He played mostly at inside centre in the last two years for his school's side, but moved to flyhalf again after the Craven Week because the Gouties flyhalf Eric Herbert was sidelined with an injury. Herbert is the son of legendary Northern Free State flyhalf, Eric.

Reynolds signed with the Lions and will join them in Johannesburg next year.
