Wildeklawer, Day 2 Results
It was a beautiful autumn day in Kimberley, when Day 2 of the Wildeklawer Topskole Toernooi got going at Hoërskool Diamantveld.
The first match of the day was a remarkable turnabout as the SARU XV beat Louis Botha of Bloemfontein. The SARU XV is made up mainly of players from Hoërskool Duineveld in Upington but also with players from Landboudal, Jim Fouché and Grey College.
SARU XV vs HTS Louis Botha, 31-9
Down 9-3 at half-time after three penalty goals by Jeandré Christian, Louis Botha scored four tries for 28 points in the second half. It took them just three minutes to get the lead when big Teubes Brits charged through several smaller opponents to score a try which Tiaan Schutte converted.
After that the combined side, with a much bigger pack of forwards, took over. A penalty gave them a five-metre line-out. They bashed and prop David du Toit scored. 17-9.
The next try was exciting, as an intercept always is. Grey College wing Godfrey Simelane incepted and raced some 70 metres for a try in the tight corner which right-footed kicked Tiaan Schutte converted as he did the last try when substitute scrumhalf CD Wilke charged down an attempted clearance and dived on the bouncing ball in in-goal

Glenwood vs Noord-Kaap, 27-26
In the end each side four tries but Jerome Bossr beat a Northerns' conversion.
Glenwood led 14-0 early in the match but two tries by captain Gerhard Holtzhausen meant that Noord-Kaap drew level. Glenwood's tries both came from excellent work by flyhalf Jerome Bossr. For the first he switched with inside centre Marthinus Holtzhausen who broke going left and then fed right wing on his outside and Ruan van Rensburg scored. For the second Bossr broke and gave to Donovan du Randt who scored.
In the second half Bossr kicked a penalty to give Glenwood the lead but when Glenwood's handling failed Cameron Hufke on the left wing snatched the ball and raced over 70 metres for a try, which Wilfred Bowers, who was a Craven Week for Griquas in 2014, converted, and the local side led 21-17.
But two minutes later Glenwood were back in the lead when Holtzhausen broke in the centre with force and acceleration beating five opponents to score. 22-21
A turnover gave Noord-Kaap a chance and Cleo Adams, Bower and Brandon Melim, a substitute today though he played at Craven Week last year, went darting for the line. Noord-Kaap bashed and hooker Jahnu Pieterse scored. The missed conversion proved costly even though Northerns were ahead 26-22.
Glenwood used a penalty to get a line-out, formed a maul as Northerns stood off, a defence which was a folly as Glenwood rolled ahead and Austin Brummer got the winning touchdown.
To their credit Noord-Kaap eschewed kicks at goal, preferring to tap penalties in search of tries. Further to their credit, they are old-fashioned enough not to indulge in emotional outbursts of hugging when they scored a try. They are clearly used to scoring tries.

Outeniqua vs Waterkloof, 19-16
The Klofies led 13-6 at half-time but Dion Scholtz's try and Manie Libbok's boot won it for the Kwaggas.
With seven minutes to play the score in this exciting match was 16-all and then Manie Libbok goaled a penalty to make it 19-16.
Waterkloof dominated this last seven minutes. They turned up a kick in front of the posts for a line-out and a chance to win the match. But their hands let them down at times. And then from a scrum, as the final hooter sounded they attacked down the right and five metres from Kwaggas' goal-line Dylan Robinson was stopped. He threw the ball inside but Outeniqua ran it out for victory.

Boland Lanbou vs Menlopark, 24-20
It was tight all the way. At half-time Boland Landbou led 14-13.
Each side scored two tries.
Menlo's flyhalf Nathan Nienhaber scored the first dropped goal of the tournament.
A feature of the match was the play and the astonishing goal-kicking of the Boland Landbou scrumhalf Jondré Williams, who was not put off by the wind. Last year he played for the Western Province side at Craven Week.
Menlopark scored first when, after two minutes, tall flyhalf Nathan Nienaber kicked a penalty goal.
Five minutes later a penalty gave Boland Landbou a five-metre line-out. They mauled and flank Athi Magwala scored a try. 5-3 to the farmers but that lasted only four minutes for Nienaber dropped an elegant goal. 6-5 to Menlo. They extended the lead when from a close penalty they tapped and charged and Wiehann Pienaar scored. Nienaber converted. 13-5 to Menlo.
After a good break by Hanlo Marais, Williams kicked a penalty to make it 13-8 and then on the stroke of half-time he kicked another, this time a long kick into the wind. At the break the score was 13-11.
Early in the second half Landbou were attacking, Menlo went offside and Williams goaled to give his side a slender 14-13 lead after 35 minutes. This did not last long for centre Wayne van der Bank had a good run and Nienaber darted ahead before giving to Wayne van der Bank for a try under the crossbar. Nienaber converted. 20-14 after 38 minutes.
Again a penalty gave Boland Landbou an attacking line-out, this time about 15 metres out. They formed a maul and raced it over the line to give Magwala his second try to smile about. Williams converted from close to touch. 21-20 with 11 minutes to play. And Williams was at it again when he goaled one from 47 metres to make the final score 24-20 to the boys from Paarl.

Paarl Boys' High vs Dr EG Jansen, 19-14
This was a hard match between two tough sides, one in which the huge EG Jansen pack perhaps had the edge but one in which Boishaai just did not surrender anything, not a millimetre of territory. It was a battle.
Play swung backwards and forwards. The Boksburgers applied pressure but then Manuel Rass broke out.
There were just two scores in the first half - a goal and a penalty goal.
EG scored first. They attacked down the right and then went wide left where big flank Dylan van der Walt surged over for a try which flyhalf Xander Crouse converted. Then just before half-time fullback Jean-Luc Cilliers kicked a penalty goal for Paarl Boys' high. 7-3 to EG.
In the second half Cilliers kicked another [penalty goal and then the Paarlites took the lead when EG committed a handling error at a defensive line-out and Boys' High footed into in-goal where captain Andreas van Wyk dived on the ball for a try, which Cilliers converted. 13-7 to Boys' High after 38 minutes.
The lead lasted three minutes.
From a line-out on the half-way line on EG's right, Craven Week wing Irvin Ali took a pass from scrumhalf Ginter Smuts and knifed through the defence on a long run. Challenged Ali gave a perfect pass to speeding Eric Cronjé who was over under the posts. EG were back in the lead at 14-13 after 41 minutes. That was the half-time score.
There were just two scores in the second, seesawing half. They were both penalty gaols by Cilliers to restore the lead at 16-14 after 43 minutes and then extend to lead to 19-14 with three minutes to play.

Affies vs Paarl Gim, 22-22
When Gimmies ran out onto the field their Paarl neighbours, Boland Landbou, lined up to for an encouraging tunnel.
On this day of close encounters, this was the second draw, a fitting result for an two excellent teams in an excellent match.
After just five minutes the score was 3-all. After 60 minutes it was 22-all. It was only at half-time that there was a significant lead - 17-8 to Paarl Gim.
Eddie Fouché, who went to Craven Week for the Blue Bulls in 2014, kicked a penalty goal and then Gim's George Lourens kicked one for his side.
Both sides gave their backs every chance to run with the ball and Affies were doing just that when disaster struck. Little left wing Keenan Abrahams leapt to intercept a lobbed pass and off he sped 55 metres for a try at the posts, and after just six minutes Paarl Gim led 10-3.
Affies were close to scoring when they counterattacked and fullback Pieter Coetzee headed for the right corner and a try looked certain till Abrahams brought him down with a tackle from behind.
A penalty gave Affies a five-metre line-out and they bashed at the line. Then they had a five-metre scrum but Gim stood firm. Only eventually Fouché burst through two defenders and scored. 10-8 after 24 minutes.
But before half-time Gim extended their lead when centre Charl du Toit handed off strongly and accelerated to score under the posts. 17-8.
Affies had the wind in the second half and were soon on the attack. Divan Henning tapped a close penalty and Philip Krause got close to the line before hooker Schalk Erasmus scored and Fouché converted. Now it was 17-15 to Gim.
After a break by left wing Christian Strydom, Eduan Lubbe, the Blue Bulls eighthman in 2014, charged over forced his way through three defenders to score. Fouché converted and Affies led 22-17 with 11 minutes to play.
Gim now threw everything into attack. They were at the line but lost a turnover. They charged down a clearing kick and claimed a try but were penalised for being offside. They counterattacked. They turned a penalty into a five-metre line-out but again suffered a turnover. And then suddenly Gim sent left wing Max Thalwitzer hurtling for the right corner and a try. 22-all with the conversion to come but it was wide from far put into the wind.
There were still five minutes to play but there was no change to the score.
It was a splendid match.

Monument vs Grey College, 17-7
It does not happen often that Grey lose wherever the match is played. This one was on neutral ground, closer to Bloemfontein to Krugersdorp but the Monument of Krugersdorp beat Grey of Bloemfontein. The score-line may flatter Monnas but nobody could begrudge them victory in the gathering gloom of a Kimberley evening.
In fact it was a pity that the light shed much of its brightness as the game went on for it was a wonderful game that deserved to be played in bright light.
Something of the Lions has rubbed off on Monument where Hans Coetzee, formerly a coach at the Lions is now back with Monnas. Like the Lions, Monnas always look for a chance to run and do not mind where they are on the field to do so. They give the lie to cliches such as You've got to learn the right to go wide, You need to be patient, You have to stick to your structures, You don't run in your own territory.
After a break by Marnus Boshoff had set Grey on the attack, when he looked certain to score till felled from being by big Reyno Potgieter. Grey tapped a penalty five metres from the Monnas line and charged, but they lost the ball and immediately Monnas ran out of desperate defence, sure of their handling and running straight.
Xander Kruger and Len Massyn had good runs for Monnas and PR Serfontein and speedy Dian Gouws for Grey, as play ebbed and flowed. Monument were having the better of the line-outs but for the rest things were even, the defences relentless.
Monnas scored first when Kruger goaled a penalty in a match when penalties were far fewer than in previous matches on the day. That was the half-time score, a niggardly 3-0. It may seem niggardly but the play in the half had been generous indeed.
Monnas had a golden chance to score. They tapped a penalty in their own 22 and MJ Pelser kicked a long way downfield. Speedy wing Odwa Nkunjana chased and footed on. He won the race for the ball as Gerrie Koegelenberg covered. but with the line at his mercy, right at the line, Nkunjana knocked the bouncing ball on.
Grey had a five metre scrum but the pressure Monnas exerted earned them a five-metre scrum.
Monnas broke out of their 22 again and a penalty gave them an attacking line-out. They mauled and then suddenly Kruger dummied, accelerated and cut clean through the adamantine Grey defence for a try at the posts without a hand laid on him. 10-0 after 45 minutes.
Grey came back on the attack. They had a penalty near the posts, five metres from the Monnas line. Centre Dawid Snyman tapped and darted over for a try that took Monnas by surprise. Mario Vieira converted. 190-7 after 47 minutes.
Grey had a chance to score when they counterattacked on the left and gathered a chip.
Monnas had a chance to score when Nkunjana raced for the line but Gouws caught him from behind.
Then with two minutes to play, Monnas tapped a penalty near the Grey line and formed a maul. Over they went for a try, credited to Massyn. Kruger converted. 17-7.
Monnas then emptied their bench to give all their players a chance to savour a rare victory over Grey. "I played that day when we beat Grey," will be said for long years to come.
