Wildeklawer results, Day Two
It was a beautiful, sunny morning at Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley for the second day of the Wildeklawer Super Schools tournament, and the rugby in the first, thrilling match matched the weather. It was a splendid match.
Maritzburg College v Diamantveld
It was also a match that could go either way as the lead changed several times. It was not quite the muscular Kriel twins against mercurial Granville Adams, though those were the three stars of the match. Adams scored first and Jesse Kriel last and Maritzburg College won 32-27.
Granville Adams sped down the left for his try in the left corner in the very first minute of the match. Right wing Dries du Plooy got the second, converted by Deon van Zyl to give the home side, who were enjoying a gentle breeze and a low sun, a 12-3 lead. At this stage it was all Diamantveld with their rhythmic backs.
But then fullback Jesse Kriel ran round Dries du Plooy and played inside to brother Danie who scored. Jesse converted and the score was 12-10. Danie Kriel then broke strongly and gave Jesse a chance to score. This gave College a 15-12 lead and a huge boost to their confident.
On the stroke of half-time Deon van Zyl kicked a penalty and the score was a fair 15-all at the break.
Deon van Zyl darted and powered through five College forwards to score and the home side led 22-15. Back came College and replacement left wing Banele Ngwenya had an overlap on the right, running round for a try at the posts. Then scores were level against at 22-all/
The scores stayed level till Granville Adams went scooting away, Gio Aplon style, down the left to score his second try. 27-22 to Diamantveld.
But College got close and powerful Jesse Kriel bumped off two defenders to score at the posts. He converted and kicked a penalty to ensure victory for his side.
It was a splendid match.

Outeniqua v Glenwood
Two five-metre line-outs early in the match set Outeniqua up for victory. Glenwood on the other hand did not recover from the setbacks.
The first five-metre line-out was a Glenwood ball but the throw was too long and nippy scrumhalf Leighton Eksteen snatched the ball, scored the try and converted it.
The second was an Outeniqua throw after a penalty. They set up a maul but burly Stefan Grundlingh burst away with the ball and powered over. Eksteen converted and then kicked a penalty. Outeniqua's next score was a great individual effort. Glenwood were tackled just outside the Outeniqua 22. Warrick Gelant, the strong, fast Outeniqua centre leant over the tackle and picked up the ball as players gathered suddenly he burst clear and raced over 70 metres for the try. That gave Outeniqua a commanding lead, one that was probably unfair to Glenwood. But they used two penalties to attack the Outeniqua line and big lock powered over to make the half-time scope 22-7.
The second half was disjointed but after a penalty goal Outeniqua again scored a try. Glenwood dropped the ball amongst the backs and Warrick Gelant toed it ahead, grabbed the high-bouncing ball and scored under the posts.
From a scrum Glenwood scored a splendid try when outside centre Nkululeko Marwana cut back and sprinted some 30 metres to score.

Grey College v EG Jansen
EG Jansen started off like a house on fire and were all over Grey. They had scored two tries before Grey got one but then a plethora of penalties seemed to quench their fire and sapped their confidence. In the end Grey won 41-22.
Their first try came from a long maul which they marched downfield till they gave the backs a chance and Johan Labuschagne cut back off a lost pass and scored. Ruan Potgieter converted.
After a few misses Pieter Jordaan goaled a penalty but back came the red-shirted Jansies and from a five -metre line-out they went wide and Leon Potgieter scored.
After this early promise the game ebbed away from the brave Boksburg side. Pieter Faber scored under the posts and then Pieter Jordaan kicked a conversion and a penalty goal to give the Bloemfontein side a 13-12 lead at half-time.
Grey's handling, wonky in the first half, improved and fullback EW Viljoen scored a hat-trick of tries while the only other EG Jansen try was scored by JP van der Nest.

Paarl Boys' High v Monument
There was a time when Paarl Boys' High, leading 25-6 at half-time and then 32-13 well into the second half looked to be cruising to victory but Monnas came back strongly so that the score was 32-28 at the end.
The first Boys' High try came from a Monnas' knock-on. Ryno van der Merwe picked it up and passed immediately. What happened from then on was the smoothest interpassing imaginable till Niel Maritz cut through for a try at the posts. With a dummy and a dive Pieter Schoonraad scored the second try and then fullback Hanno Kotze came into the line from a line-out and simply ran 50 metres and scored.
But Monnas came back in the second half. Steven du Plessis put pressure on Pieter Schoonraad at a defensive scrum and Dwayne Pienaar was on hand to score next to the posts.
Boishaai attacked with a long maul on their right and then went wide to give Darian Hock an easy run-in for the try. 32-13.
Monnas attacked and burly Stephan Vermeulen smashed through the defence for a try and then just before the final whistle Regie Viljoen cut through to end the scoring.

Affies v Paul Roos
After slipping up in the second half against Maritzburg College after being well ahead and nearly losing the match, Paul Roos were aware that they had to play to the end, especially as Affies led 15-14 at the break and it was probably their lighter pack that deserves most of the credit in their side's 32-22 over the powerful Affies side.
Affies scored the first try after Jason. First Jurie Linde broke and headed on a long run for the corner but he was held up over the line by Jason Worral and Marcus Geldenhuys. This produced a five-metre scrum for Affies. They bashed and Calvin Allison forced his way over.
There were two splendid tries in the match, once scored by Jason Worral of an inside pass and one when Affies one a turnover and hooker François Steyn raced away down the midfield with the ball in one hand before lobbing a long pass to left wing Andries van der Merwe who went over in the corner.
The sides each scored three tries but Jason Worral's kicking was the difference.

Paarl Gim v Waterkloof
It was an even first half with Paarl Gim just ahead 14-11, both sides scoring and nearly scoring, but then, breeze at back and Handré Pollard in charge, Gim eased away to a big 38-11 victory.
It was Pollard who juggled, straightened and broke clean through, drawing the fullback and giving Altus Momsen a simple run to the line.
Lourens Boddington dropped the only goal of the drop tournament and Kobus Marais kicked a penalty but then Handré Pollard got Wion Robbertse running and little Lotter {Pretorius sold a bit of a dummy and powered over between two forwards. That made it 14-6.
Waterkloof came back into contention when Lourens Boddington grubbered into Gimmies' ingoal and Rohan Janse van Rensburg grounded the ball just inside the touch-in-goal line. Waterkloof came back and Sean Phillips was tackled out right at the corner.
Gimmies attacked and Jacques Vermeulen was nearly over and in fact may have scored. Instead they had a five-metre scrum on the far left. Lotter Pretorius went wide right and then popped a perfect pass to Loek van der Merwe who had come in from the left wing and scored. 21-11.
Handré Pollard kicked a penalty goal and then put his side on the attack. Klofies threw into a defensive line-out and found Rikus Bothma instead. the strong eighthman powered to the line and then Gimmies went left where Handré Pollard skipped over under the crossbar.
Lotter Pretorius had a long break to put his side on the attack. They tapped a penalty and bashed at the line. Pretorius, who would not look out of place in an Under-14 side. got the ball and slipped eel-like through three hefty forwards to score.
