Wildeklawer Tournament this week
The schools selected are, at least usually, top teams, and they get to play each other. It may well be the tournament to define the position of each team this year.
Of the teams in the first FNB Top 20 of 2017, Paul Roos, Paarl Gim, Paarl Boys' High, Grey College (Bloemfontein), Monument, Waterkloof and Affies are there and they are ranked 1 to 7. Glenwood, Helpmekaar, HTS Middelburg, Selborne and Garsfontein are also there. That means 11 of the 20 teams taking part are in the current Top 20. Of the others Boland Landbou, Dr EG Jansen, Oakdale, Outeniqua, Diamantveld and Welkom Gimnasium were also chosen in the final Top 20 of 2016. The only two teams not ranked in the last two Top 20s are Stellenberg and Noord-Kaap.
Of the teams Paarl Gim and Grey College are unbeaten this year while Paarl Boys' High, who lost to Christchurch Boys' High in New Zealand, have not lost to a South African school for two whole seasons and the start of this one. The last match of the tournament will be the two unbeaten sides - Paarl Gim and Grey College.
Of the teams at the tournament Paarl Gim have beaten Stellenberg, Affies, Dr EG Jansen, Garsfontein and Paul Roos. Grey have beaten Waterkloof - 67-12.
It certainly is a tournament to watch.
