Lions duo cleared to play

They will travel with the team to Cape Town, to take on Western Province in a Currie Cup Round Six match at Newlands on Friday.

Blue Bulls fullback Duncan Matthews, meanwhile, will have a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday after being cited for a dangerous tackle in their clash against Western Province last Saturday.

Coetzee received a red card in the 51st minute in the 31-47 loss to the Sharks, after his boot made contact with an opposition player's face.

However, his actions were deemed as "entirely accidental", with no intention of kicking his opponent.

Janse van Rensburg's citing, also for a dangerous tackle, was not upheld.

The outcome of Matthews’ disciplinary hearing is expected to be announced on Tuesday.

While the two Lions players were cleared, the team could be without scrumhalf Dillon Smit and captain Ryan Kankowski.

Smit fractured his ankle against the Sharks and will undergo surgery on Friday.

He is likely to miss the rest of the competition.

Kankowski strained his groin and is undergoing scans on Monday.

The Lions - who are without seven Springboks and a handful of Super Rugby stars that are playing abroad during the Currie Cup season - have won just once in four matches this season.

They are in sixth place on the seven-team standings with nine points - two points behind the fifth-placed WP.
