Boland's brain drain continues

Less than a week after experienced coach Alan Zondagh resigned from his post as Director of Rugby, it was revealed that Brent Janse van Rensburg has resigned as head coach of the Boland Cavaliers.

His departure comes after just one season in charge of the Boland Rugby Union's professional team.

Zondagh last week cited "excessive interference by the board and the executive of the Boland Rugby Union", for his decision to head to the exit door.

Janse van Rensburg, who was appointed as coach in January of this year, was not as forthcoming about his departure.

He previously coached the Eastern Province Kings, but headed to the Cavaliers in the wake of the cash crunch at the now bankrupt EP Kings.

"I am thankful for the opportunity afforded to me to be able to contribute to Boland," Janse van Rensburg said in a sanitised statement, issued by the Boland Rugby Union.

"I feel the team is in a better place than it was in January this year.

"I am incredibly proud of this group of players, the efforts they gave and also very thankful to our management team for their time invested into the team.

"It has been a memorable year that has certainly contributed towards my growth and I wish everyone involved with Boland the best."

When asked about rugby365 for the reasons for his departure, Janse van Rensburg referred the website back to the statement.

However, reports claim his departure is linked to the same 'interference' cited by Zondagh.

According to Ivan Pekeur, President of the Boland Rugby Union, Janse van Rensburg's decision is a huge loss for Boland.

"He [Janse van Rensburg] is one of the best young coaches in the country and he is destined to coach the national team one day," Pekeur said in a statement.

"His decision to retire as Boland Cavaliers head coach is one that will definitely be felt by everyone who have worked with him this year.

"He contributed to one of Boland's most successful seasons, especially in light of the professional team's poor performances in recent seasons."

According to Pekeur, Boland Rugby Union's board of directors are already discussing possible successors for Janse van Rensburg.

"We will definitely be considering candidates who can build on the extremely high standards that have been put in place by Janse van Rensburg," he said.

"On behalf of the Boland Rugby Union, I would like to wish Brent and his wife all the best with their future plans.

"Boland's doors will always be open for him to assist with his knowledge and inputs in order for Boland Rugby to reach even greater heights in the seasons to come."
