REPORT: WRU set to stop Cardiff from signing SA playmaker

NEWS: One of Wales' United Rugby Championship teams has set their sights on a South African playmaker for next season, but the Welsh Rugby Union is standing in their way.

According to a report from WalesOnline, Cardiff are keen on signing Tinus de Beer from the Pumas to boost their flyhalf stocks ahead of the 2023/2024 season.

Cardiff will be low on No.10s with Jarrod Evans' decision to join Harlequins and Rhys Priestland hanging up his boots.

It is believed that Cardiff's primary targets were Sam Davies (Dragons) and Rhys Patchell (Scarlets), but they could not meet the wage demands.

De Beer is now seen as the more affordable option, but the WRU are not supporting the decision.

According to the report, the WRU believes that bringing in De Beer will harm the development of young flyhalves in the region.

Cardiff will need the WRU's approval to sign De Beer due to the new Welsh rugby financial agreement.

De Beer, who helped the Pumas win their first Currie Cup title last year, has been in fine form this season for the Nelspruit side.

Before joining the Pumas, he also played for Griquas and the Bulls.
