VIDEO: Bulls speedster makes intentions clear on playing future
SPOTLIGHT: When Devon Williams joined the Bulls on a loan deal back in August 2023 as one of the top try-scorers in the Currie Cup, he knew it would be a battle to earn a starting berth among all the big-name Springboks.
Since then he operated as part of a potent Bulls back three with Sebastian de Klerk and Sergeal Petersen in the absence of the Boks while they were on World Cup duty.
The fullback, on loan from the Pumas, made his debut for the Nelspruit side on July 15, 2016, in a Currie Cup qualifier against the Leopards at the Mbombela Stadium and in May last year he played in his 100th game for the men in pink.
He also represented Western Province 22 times and made three appearances in the Stormers jersey.
Since joining the Bulls, he has consistently continued to shine in the fullback position.
Last weekend against the Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate he won the man of the match award with a performance of speed, deft feet and beating his opposition time and again.
Before that, he scored the opening try against Edinburgh and made the Bulls faithful sit up and take notice once again.
But the 31-year-old Williams might not call Pretoria home for much longer. His contract negotiations are currently underway and there was no clear indication from the Bulls' Director of Rugby, Jake White, on Wednesday if the speedster will stay on.
Williams was very open and honest about his time at the Bulls and that he would not mind seeing out his career in Pretoria.
"It has been a step up. I’ve learnt a lot. It’s a different environment and you just have to adapt with the travelling and everything," Williams told a media briefing at the training field.
"I don’t know what the future holds, but it is definitely where I would like to end off my career."
Talking about his man-of-the-match performance against the Bears, Williams was quick to give his teammates the accolades for making it possible for him to shine.
“We knew they had a good kicking game, so my team gave me the opportunity to express myself.
“For any player to get player of the match, it is very nice. A lot of my teammates made it possible to just go out and express myself. It’s a great feeling, but it is also about how I back it up.”
The Bulls host the high-flying Bordeaux outfit at Loftus on Saturday. The French are top of the log after three wins from three outings.
