Ospreys lock escapes lengthy ban for controversial croc roll

NEWS: Ospreys lock James Fender has been handed a one-game ban for his red card in the United Rugby Championship draw against Cardiff.

The 23-year-old was red-carded in the 38th minute by referee Ben Breakspear at the Arms Park on New Year's Day for an illegal croc-roll on Cardiff flanker Dan Thomas at a ruck clearout.

Fender appeared before the disciplinary committee on Wednesday for an act of foul play – contrary to Law 9.20 (d) A Player may remove the jackler from the tackle area by pushing/driving them backwards (including by grabbing the knee/leg), but must not, roll, pull or twist an opponent.

The initial suspension was two weeks.

However, Fender received one week of mitigation due to his "apology, good record and full participation throughout the disciplinary process".

The lock missed the semi-professional match against Cardiff on January 4 and will be available for the Challenge Cup match against Newcastle Falcons this weekend.

The European encounter could serve as a final Wales audition for him ahead of the announcement of Warren Gatland's Six Nations squad next week.
