Van Velze 'speared' for four weeks

Gerrit-Jan van Velze (Northampton Saints) was suspended for four weeks, after being found guilty of a 'tip' tackle offence in Sunday's Premiership match against Exeter Chiefs.

The player was charged following a report from the independent citing officer Micky Ward.

Van Velze, who pleaded guilty to the charge of having executed a spear tackle, is suspended from September 12 until October 9 and is free to play again on October 10.

Earlier Anthony Carter (Moseley) was found guilty of an amended charge of dangerous tackling in the RFU Championship match against Nottingham.

Carter is suspended for two weeks from September 12 to 25 and is free to play again on September 26.

The cases were heard by a panel of John Brennan (chairman), Dan White and John Loughton.
