Coaching debacle: Kings abort selection process

UPDATE: The Southern Kings have opted to stop the process of selecting a new Head Coach.

The Southern Kings Board have issued a statement revealing their decision to abort the process due to 'persistent media leaks' which have compromised the process.

The Port Elizabeth franchise revealed that Rob Kempson will act as interim Head Coach until the position is filled.

"The events of the past few days have convinced the GRC [Greatest Rugby Company], the majority shareholder in the Southern Kings, to accept the initial recommendation of the interviewing panel to abort the process of selecting a new Head Coach," said the statement.

"The panel reported that they felt the process was undermined around the confusion of the World Rugby Level 3 certification. In addition, the persistent media leaks have further undermined the integrity of the process.

"In the interim, Robbi Kempson, will act as interim Head Coach until the position is filled,"

The latest statement comes after a week of reports surrounding former Springboks head coach  Peter De Villiers' coaching credentials.

It was reported that De Villiers was not in possession of a Level Three coaching certificate – despite the fact that he was the coach of the South African national side for four years.

However, De Villiers responded to the reports by calling it “lies”.
