Smith goes under the knife

Ospreys and Wales prop Nicky Smith is set to undergo surgery after suffering a significant pectoral tear in Wales' 16-34 loss to New Zealand.

Scans revealed the tear and upon consultation with specialists, the consensus was that the best course of treatment for the injury was surgery which will keep him sidelined for up to four months.

Adding to Ospreys' injury woes is Canadian wing Jeff Hassler who suffered a knee injury during Canada's 9-18 loss to Romania. The extent of the damage is still being assessed before a decision on the best course of treatment is made.

Further injury concerns are Duncan Jones and Ryan Bevington who joins Smith and Hassler on the sidelines.

Jones left the field during the first half of their game against Ulster with what has been confirmed as medial ligament damage to the knee. Fortunately, no surgery is required but he could be out for up to six weeks.

Bevington has suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from surgery on a long-standing groin injury. Having consulted with specialists again, the decision has been made that he requires further surgery.
