Warriors scrumhalf sidelined

Glasgow Warriors scrumhalf Niko Matawalu has broken the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during pre-season training.

The Fijian has undergone an operation and is expected to be out of action for several weeks.

Meanwhile, Peter Horne has had his ACL reconstruction operation and has commenced his rehabilitation.

A number of players who sustained injuries last season, including Mike Cusack, Finlay Gillies, Dougie Hall, Ruaridh Jackson, Pat MacArthur and Duncan Weir are all recovering well and it’s hoped they’ll be fit for the early part of the new season.

Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: “We’re naturally disappointed that Niko will miss the start of the season.

“He brings so much to the squad both on and off the pitch and we wish him well in his recovery.

“Chris [Cusiter] is scheduled to return to full training within the next couple of weeks and I've been really pleased with how Ali [Price] has adapted to our training, since he joined us a few weeks ago.

“Along with Henry [Pyrgos], who is coming off the back of an excellent season with Glasgow and Scotland, there will be good competition for the No.9 jersey this season.”
