Coach reinforcement for Fiji Sevens

Former Sevens star Timoci Wainiqolo has been named Fiji's interim coach for the Australia and New Zealand legs of the world series.

Fiji Rugby Union operations manager Vilikesa Rinavuaka said usual coach Alifereti Dere, a member of the Fiji military, would continue as head coach at all other venues.

Following the 2006 coup in Fiji, Australia and New Zealand imposed travel sanctions which prohibit members of the Fiji military and their families from visiting the two countries.

"Wainiqolo is brought in to take the team to Australia and New Zealand. Dere cannot go because there is travel sanctions placed on him," Rinavuaka said.

"Dere will take charge for the other legs of the series."

Wainiqolo was a member of the Fiji team that won the prestigious Hong Kong Sevens for three consecutive years from 1990-92 and also played five Tests.

Fiji defeated New Zealand in the Australia final last year without Dere, but Rinavuaka said they want a coach present when they defend their crown this year.

The Australia round of the Sevens series will be held on the Gold Coast on October 13-14 while the New Zealand round will be in Wellington in February next year.
