Kenya drop MIA Injera

Kenya have dropped its top try-scorer Collins Injera and called up teenage wing Billy Odhiambo for this month's Hong Kong and Japan Sevens, officials said on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old Odhiambo, who impressed the selectors with his performance with the country's second tier side, Shujaa, in the Zimbabwe International Sevens last week, will play alongside experienced Sydney Ashioya and Eden Agero, who have both returned from long-term injuries.

"We are pooled with New Zealand, France and USA in Hong Kong. This is a very difficult pool - there will be no hiding place but we are obviously going for maximum points," said Kenya's assistant coach Felix Ochieng.

"We are glad to welcome back Ashioya to provide the inspirational leadership and experience, while young Billy comes in to give that extra edge at wing and centre," he added.

But there is no place in the team for Injera, who is ranked fifth in the IRB Sevens all-time try-scoring standings, after the wing was suspended by his club for failing to play in a league game.

Head coach Mike Friday, however, said the player can still play for the team in the future after he resolves the issue with his club.

Kenya are in sixth spot in the IRB World Sevens Series standings.
