Kiwis 'outthought' the BlitzBoks
New Zealand grabbed their third tournament title in six matches on the 2015/16 Sevens World Series, powering past the BlitzBoks 19-14 in the Final.
New Zealand added another title to those won in Wellington and Sydney, bouncing back after a quarter-final exit last week in Las Vegas.
Legendary Kiwi coach Gordon Tietjens, who has lead his country to 12 titles in 16 seasons, said their tactics worked better in the Final.
"We started slowly in the tournament, in a very tough pool, but we got better and better as it went on," Tietjens said.
"I was really concerned how we were going to hold South Africa [in the Final], with the pace they had - which was a real concern.
"However, sometimes you need those tough games and they only had one tough game against Fiji.
"We had a gameplan to play them and it worked.
"I am really pleased that we won the first tournament here in Canada."
Captain Tim Mikkelson was also full of praise for the character of his team.
"We struggled last week in Las Vegas with the new team, getting our combinations together - but this week we really wanted to go better and I am just so pleased we won the Final because it has been a hard week," Mikkelson said.
"We let ourselves down last week and dropped down the table and we really wanted to finish strong in this tournament," he added.
"It was a tough tournament, six real hard games, and I think every game came down to the last whistle and the boys showed some heart," Dickson said.
