Samurai do Premier League double

Samurai beat giant-killers the Unlimited Titans 33-17 in the Cup Final on Sunday to secure back-to-back George Premier League Sevens titles.

Samurai were in a league of their own and stormed through the competition unbeaten to retain their crown and pick up the R1-million cheque.

The star-studded side beat Living Ball 19-5 in the quarterfinals and entered the Cup Final brimming with confidence after shutting out hosts SWD Eagles 26-0 in the semifinals.

The surprise package of the tournament, the Unlimited Titans, made it all the way to the Cup decider following a 19-10 win over the Sharks in the quarterfinals and an empathic 29-7 victory over Paul Treu’s Kenya in the semifinals.

However, Samurai proved to be a bridge too far in the Cup Final.

Kenya finished third thanks to a 33-15 win over the SWD Eagles in a one-sided third-fourth place play-off.

Living Ball bounced back from their Cup quarterfinal loss to Samurai, easing past fan favourites Kaizer Chiefs 43-5 before going on to topple the Sharks 26-22 to capture the Plate.

The Leopards, meanwhile, edged Eye of the Tiger 17-14 to clinch the Bowl. The former beat Masakane Old Boys 33-7 and the latter defeated the Cheetahs 24-19 in the Bowl semifinals.
