Speight's Olympic dream ends

Speight, who was on the comeback trail after an eye injury earlier this year, sustained the injury in Game Four of a six-match series between the Australian national Sevens side and the Australian Development team on Tuesday evening and is expected to be sidelined for up to 12 weeks.

"We're all gutted for Henry. He made a commitment to the program and has done everything he possibly could to get himself in the frame for Olympic selection."

"Even after the facial injury he received some 10 weeks ago, Henry's commitment didn't waver but the rugby gods just haven't been kind to him whatsoever. On behalf of everyone at the Australian Sevens program, we would like to wish Henry all the best in his recovery," Australian Sevens head coach Andy Friend said.

The Fijian-born Speight, 28, played in the Dubai and Sydney Sevens tournaments this year, scoring two tries. He is not in the Wallaby squad that is currently playing a three-Test series against England.

Rugby is returning to the Olympic schedule in Brazil this year after a gap of 92 years.
