Hard knock ends Hardie's Six Nations
An MRI scan after Scotland's 29-13 win over Wales confirmed the flank damaged his medial collateral ligament (MCL) and is expected to be out for several weeks.
The knee injury will see him take no further part in the championship.
Having already lost captain Greig Laidlaw and back row Josh Strauss for the remainder of the tournament before the Wales match, they will now head south to face England at Twickenham without Hardie as well.
Meanwhile, wing Tommy Seymour sustained a blow to the ribs in the act of scoring but was fine to continue. He is not considered a concern according to the Scotland medical team.
