Big Benn not chasing records

Records are made to be broken, but for Benn Robinson, becoming the NSW Waratahs most capped player in their history is not nearly as important as the opportunity to put on the blue jersey once more.

On Saturday, Robinson, 30, will overtake his idol and past captain, Phil Waugh, when he plays his 137th match for the Waratahs against traditional rivals, the Queensland Reds, at Lang Park.

"I think its extra special for me to put on another jersey," Robinson said.

"Every time your name gets called out saying that you're selected for the Waratahs, it's a very special moment.

"Whether you're playing your first game against Salta or your last one, they mean just as much, every single jersey."

Widely recognised for his strength in the scrum, Robinson, a 72-Test veteran, said that his love for the style of rugby played in Australia and the closeness in the group at the Waratahs kept him based in Moore Park, despite the lure of overseas incentives.

"Someone setting me a challenge or a goal in front of me is a big motivator for me and to become a better player, to realise what I think my potential is a big motivator for me," Robinson said.

"I've been very fortunate that I have played at this club for a long time.  For me it's never been an interest [the idea of heading overseas].

"I love being in this environment and love this team.  I love seeing new players come through, develop and become world class players."

And while Robinson isn't looking too far in front of his own two feet, the lure of a potential spot in the Wallabies World Cup squad in September, something that injury cruelled him of in 2011, does excite him.

"It's something that I've missed out on and of course I would love to be involved in it but for me it's the steps that you have to take to get there," Robinson said.

"There's a lot that I have to do, there are a lot of games in between, and for me it's easy to say its game-by-game, its day-by-day, but it's about working hard.  Then if the cards fall my way, then they do.

"I think I've put myself in the position where I can stick my hand up as high as I possibly can and being in a team like this is why you can do it."
