Chiefs to test scrumhalf cover

Kerr-Barlow received a head knock during his team's 16-7 over the Western Force in Perth last weekend and did not return for the second half of that game.

Chiefs head coach Dave Rennie said Kerr-Barlow will be rested this weekend even if the All Black recovers from concussion.

With Finlay Christie suspended for three weeks for stamping, it leaves the Chiefs short on scrumhalf cover.

Jonathan Taumateine will likely start in the No.9 jersey against the Sunwolves with Richard Judd providing cover off the bench.

Taumateine featured off the bench in the Chiefs' season opener against the Highlanders and played for 16 minutes against the Blues in Round Two.

Brad Weber was the franchise's other originally contracted No.9, but he is out for the season with a leg injury.

Meanwhile, All Black centre Charlie Ngatai is not too far from making his comeback.

The midfielder played 80 minutes of club rugby. However, Rennie feels Ngatai is still a few weeks away from being considered for Super Rugby again.

Ngatai has not featured in Super Rugby since suffering a head knock in May last year.
