Gibson set to keep his job

NEWS: Daryl Gibson is set to sign a new contract with the Waratahs.

Gibson’s current contract ends after this year’s Super Rugby tournament but talks about his future with the franchise have been described as “positive”.

“We are both very comfortable with the way discussions have been proceeding,” Waratahs Chairman Roger Davies told stuff.co.nz. “We are confident in reaching a mutually acceptable and timely outcome with no major stumbling blocks in sight.”

The Waratahs are set to make their first Super Rugby play-off appearance under Gibson since he took over the head coach role from Michael Cheika in 2016.

If results go their way there is a chance that the Sydney team could end second on the overall standings and secure a home semifinal if they win their quarterfinal.

“Discussions are ongoing,” Gibson said on Thursday. “The big thing from the board is performances are critical. The team and the results do the talking.

“I enjoy my team, I enjoy my job. I really enjoy coaching this team. I think the squad is in an excellent space, not only this season but for next year as well.”
