Todd a 'natural' leader
Matt Todd may have been surprised by the call, but Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder said the flank is a natural fit for the captaincy.
In Kieran Read's absence, Todd has been formally given the nod to lead the seven-time champions and last year's beaten finalists first four rounds of this year's Super Rugby season.
"He's a leader," Blackadder told Newstalk ZB, adding: "He's got natural leadership skills.
Read will return to the team in Week Five.
Todd conceded that there was a certain amount of surprise at his new role within the Crusaders.
The flank said Blackadder was clear in what he needed.
"When he talked to me about it, he wanted someone that was here through the bulk of the pre-season and that and could sort-of lead through that as well, so it was a surprise, but I'm excited by the call up."
Blackadder said Daniel Carter is on track to play in their opening pre-season game, while Israel Dagg is confirmed to miss the opening game against the Rebels.
Meanwhile, Robbie Fruean's being welcomed back into the Crusaders pre-season training with open arms.
The midfielder has returned to the red and blacks after just one season with the Chiefs.
Blackadder said Fruean has returned to the side a changed man.
"He's brought some different energy back into the team. He's a lot more experienced. He's leading, and I think he's really comfortable here. He's got a lot of good strong mates here and he's really good for the environment as well."
Blackadder said Nemani Nadolo and Andy Ellis are also expected to back in the team soon after their overseas stints.
