'Excited to work with Morne Steyn': Lions lure Stormers No.10 to Jozi
TRANSFER NEWS: Promising Stormers flyhalf Kade Wolhuter has agreed to a loan deal with the Lions ahead of the 2023/24 United Rugby Championship season.
The playmaker has been with the Stormers since 2020, but knee injuries have prevented him from gaining regular game time.
The 22-year-old now moves to Johannesburg as he continues to recover from a knee injury, the Lions confirmed on Monday.
The flyhalf is currently recovering from a knee ligament injury he sustained during training in April. He is expected to be out of action for nine months, meaning he will only return to action in January.
His temporary move to the Lions does come as a surprise. However, the promising youngster will get a chance to work with legendary Springbok flyhalf Morne Steyn.
Steyn is currently the Lions' kicking consultant for the next two years.
"I’m excited to join this promising group of players where I can hopefully add value and contribute to us winning many games," Wolhuter said about the move to the Lions.
"At the same time, I’m looking forward to learning a lot from those around me, and especially excited to be working with Morné Steyn."
Wolhuter joins a talented group of young flyhalves at Ellis Park, including fit-again Jordan Hendrikse, Gianni Lombard and Zander du Plessis.
The Lions open their URC campaign against the Stormers at Ellis Park on October 21.
