Team Profile: Steinhoff Catsville CPUT

The Steinhoff Catsville team was founded in 2008 when 22 students decided to get together and have a run around the park with a rugby ball.

With no knowledge whatsoever of the game of rugby, these guys soon found themselves playing against their other CPUT branches (campuses) in what was to be the start of the Catsville players' rugby careers.

In 2008, Catsville had their first match against the more skilful CPUT Bellville campus - Catsville went on to lose that match by 105-0. In 2009, the Catsville squad played the same opponents and went on to draw the match - showing just how much they had improved in a few months.

The development of the teams is also thanks to the involvement of their SCR who actually convinced the tertiary institution to back the team as they entered their first competitive league - namely the UCT's Steinhoff Internal League in 2010.

The Catsville team trains on the Municipal grounds in Mowbray. With no coach and no structure of practise, these guys still make the most of their disadvantaged situation and opportunities.

* To date, the Catsville team has 55 playing members - showing that transformation is alive and kicking!

* Catsville's star players: Sibusiso Anthony (an ex-UCT Under-20 prop), Homes, Sinako, Sive and CPUT SRC President, Vuyo.
