Maties fight on, but Vics lose

A rampant FNB Maties smashed NNK 72-18 on Saturday, but Hamilton's put one hand on the 2009 WP Super League trophy by beating Victorians - also at the weekend.

Front rower Arno White scored a try double and loose forwards Bennie Booysen, Wesley Wilkins and Pieter Myburgh all crossed for tries as the defending champion Maties put their opponents to the sword.

In all, Stellenbosch's first team scored 12 tries, with scrumhalf Donald Stevens (pictured) - the 2009 Varsity Cup Player of the Tournament - converting all but one and also helping himself to a five-pointer.

However, despite Maties' comfortable win, Hamilton's 27-20 bonus point win over Victorians (Maties' second team) has all but handed the Green Point side the 2009 Super League title.

The powerful Vics team - including the likes of captain PJ Vermeulen - fought to the bitter end, but Hamilton's grabbed the winning (and bonus-point clinching) try in the final minute of play.

Hamilton's, who will represent Western Province at the National Club Championships next month, have not won the WP League title since 1936.
