Impressive Ikeys on the board
The University of Cape Town (Ikeys) secured their first win of the FNB Varsity Cup, presented by Steinhoff International, when they trumped a haphazard Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria by 39-21 on Monday evening.
It was two former Stellenbosch imports, Tiger Bax and Therlow Pietersen, who did most of the damage for their new side. Pietersen scored two tries, exploiting some ordinary defence by TUT, while Bax put away his backs into empty spaces as TUT struggled to fill the gaps.
TUT flyhalf Adillo Coutiers put his team on the scoreboard with two early penalties, but from there on it was mostly one- way UCT traffic. In front of a supportive crowd TUT couldn't string together a threatening attack, while their forwards really tackled their hearts out.
The two teams went into half-time with TUT still in it at 18-11.
Former Falcons player Johan Schwarz reduced the lead after the break and flank Johan Steenkamp, who was one of the stars of the TUT side, was rewarded for his play with a try after a TMO decision.
But it was the Ikey Tigers that scored the one try after another, raking in five on the night.
Matthew Rosslee kept the scoreboard rolling with his kicking, which was much better than a week ago in Cape Town in the two-point loss to the Maties.
Bax put the final nail in the coffin two minutes before full-time, when he darted through without a hand being laid on him.
