No damage at Craven Stadium
The fire that caused a lot of damage - and the postponement of an international hockey fixture - at Stellenbosch on Wednesday night did not damage the Danie Craven Stadium.
According to Stellenbosch Rugby Club manager Belius Potgieter, "the fire burnt all around" the Danie Craven Stadium.
"It obviously wasn't a nice thing to happen," said Potgieter to www.varsitycup.co.za, "but thankfully there was no major damage to the university.
"It burnt all around the Danie Craven Stadium as there is a lot of fynbos in the mountain-regions above the stadium and it certainly looked a lot worse at night than it did during the day.
"There was a lot of smoke yesterday and there's a lot of soot on the ground today, but thankfully there was no major damage."
Die Burger newspaper reports that the fire, which started in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, "was fanned by a strong Southeaster that rapidly drove it in the direction of the Coetzenburg sports grounds".
The hockey international between hosts South Africa and visitors Germany, which was to be played at Coetzenburg on Wednesday evening has for now been postponed to Thursday night.
