Second time luckier at Ubumbo Festival?

The second-ever annual Ubumbo Rugby Festival will be taking place at the UCTRFC's Groote Schuur fields from Friday, October 2 until Saturday, October 3.

The teams participating this year will be Ubumbo, the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Ikhaya and, all the way from the Eastern Cape; the Walter Sisulu University of Technology (WSU).

The annual Black Cherry-Ubumbo Charity Carwash will begin festivities on Lower Campus at 2pm on Friday. Proceedings will then move onto upper campus at 5pm, with an opening and welcome function at the UCT pub.

The first game of the festival will be a clash between Ubumbo and UWC kicking-off at 7.30pm. The clash between Ubumbo's fellow internal league campaigners, Ikhaya, and the visiting WSU is then scheduled for an 8.45pm start.

The second day of the festival will begin with a light lunch at 12.30pm, and the first game will get underway at 3pm between Ikhaya and UWC, with the closing game being Ubumbo versus WSU at 4.30pm.

An awards ceremeony will then be held at the UCT pub from 6pm to end off the weekend's rugby and enjoyment.

Malibuye Tom, speaking on behalf of the Ubumbo Rugby Festival, told varsitycup.co.za: "After last year's success, it was only fair to make this an annual event!

"Though teams are fewer, the event will definitely be bigger this year. Unfortunately, Fort Hare could not make it due to provincial commitments that most of their players are involved in, but we have no doubt that WSU will be the perfect substitute.

"UWC and Ikhaya are also newcomers (this year)... (but) their impressive records in the past season have made them the perfect recruits in this festival."
