UJ smash Shimlas
Both teams made a blistering start to game which saw tries of the highest quality being scored
After a Divan Nel penalty put UJ into the lead, the Shimlas stunned the few spectators in the crowd when wing Mosolwa Mafuma raced away for a nine-point try.
UJ were not to be outdone and scored a nine-point try of their own through fullback Ronald Brown after the ball went through a number of hands.
It was all UJ from that point onwards with lock David Antonites and Brown again both scoring brilliant tries to extend the lead.
They then added a fourth try when centre Bradley Moolman showed a clean pair of heels to outsprint the Shimlas defenders out wide for a nine-point score.
Shimlas did get a try back a few minutes later when centre Arthur Williams got his team a seven-point try to instil hope of a comeback. At half-time UJ led 43-20.
The Joburg team extended their lead early in the second half through a Nel penalty, but opened the door for a comeback by Shimlas when Stephan Janse Van Rensburg pounced on a loose pass - he kicked the ball ahead before gathering brilliantly to dive over for a try.
However, Shimlas defence continued to let them down with Brown again causing havoc in their defence when he put Caswell Khosa into space to score a try in the corner in 58th minute.
A penalty by Nel and another try, this time for UJ flank Wian Conradie, gave UJ a 38-point lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
Centre Robert de Bruyn got his team's seventh try in the 71st minute off a well-worked move from a line-out in the Shimlas 22. Nel could not convert, but it didn't really matter at that stage of the game.
Shimlas scored two more tries in the final five minutes through Boela Venter and Maqina Vuyani, but it was a mere consolation for the team from the Free State.
