VC club managers head to the bush

FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International Managing Director Duitser Bosman recently hosted a hunting trip for the Varsity Cup club managers - a worthwhile and enjoyable excursion for all who attended.

A seven-man team consisting of Bosman (Varsity Cup), Dougie Heymans (Shimlas), Hendrik Truter and Mervyn Taylor (both Pukke), Moby Dick (UJ), Kolie Brandt (NMMU) and Ajee Valentine made the three-day trip to the Northern Bushveld earlier this month.

There was some fantastic hunting from the start at the venue - which was some 80 kilometres west of Thabazimbi - with former Free State prop Heymans sitting the trend early on when he claimed a big 'vlakvark'.

The selfsame Heymans picked off another 'vlakvark' the following day, but Hendrik Truter rounded off the three-day trip when he claimed the biggest 'vlakvark' of them all.

Moby Dick, from the University of Johannesburg, was the undoubted star with his effort - taking down a 130-kilogram Blou Wildebeest bull - and Dougie Heymans continued to show off his hunting skills by securing a Rooibokram later on.

Duitser also joined in the fun by capturing a Rooibokram; an official Roland Ward measuring 24 inches in its horns.

Of course, the best part of the three-day excursion were the good times spent around the campfire every night, with everyone swapping some great Varsity Cup stories.

In fact, the entire 2009 tournament was played out all over again, with the gang even selecting their Team of the Tournament, with plenty of debate amongst the many 'know-it-alls'!

"It was a great outing," Varsity Cup MD Duitser Bosman told varsitycup.co.za, "it was just our way of saying thanks to those people involved in yet another fantastic Varsity Cup tournament.

"There is a great camaraderie in the Varsity Cup, which is what makes it such a wonderful tournament, and with 2009 now a thing of the past we can now start looking ahead to next year's Varsity Cup."
