Owens gets the Final

It is not at all an unexpected appointment as he has had an excellent World Cup, one of rugby's most charismatic personalities.

It will be his first World Cup Final but he has refereed every other final available to him.

His assistants are the two referees who refereed the semifinals - Jérôme Graces of France and Wayne Barnes of England.

The TMO is Shaun Veldsman of South Africa, one of the four TMOs at the World Cup and one of the most experienced.

The referee for the 3rd/4th place play-off is Johnny Lacey of Ireland who in his playing days was a wing or fullback for Munster and for Ireland A. He has the two New Zealand referees to assist him - Glen Jackson, also a top player in his playing days, and Chris Pollock. The TMO is Graham Hughes.
