Romania fit into the World Cup

Romania are the 20th - and last -team to qualify for the 2011 Rugby World Cup's final tournament in New Zealand, as they beat Uruguay 39-12 at the Stadionul National Arcul de Triumf in Bucharest.

It was the second leg of this qualifier. The first was drawn in Montevideo, which meant that winner in Bucharest would go through. There was not a great deal of doubt who the winner had been as the Teros, outplayed up front, were probably fortunate to draw 21-all at home.

The Oaks attacked from the start but their hands let them down and flyhalf  Dan Dumbrava missed an early penalty attempt but they soon settled into victory when  centre Csaba Gal burst through for a try. Dumbrava converted. 7-0.

Back came the Romanians and were rewarded with a second try - this time a penalty try. 14-0 after 11 minutes.

With lock Diego Magno in the sin bin, the Oaks took advantage to score their third try as No.8 Alexandru Manta  scored. 21-0.

That was the half-time score.

Dumbrava kicked a penalty but then centre Martin Crosa got a try for the visitors. Hope did not flicker long as wing Catalan Fercu scored the home side's fourth try.

After Ivo Dugonjic scored Uruguay's second try, Madalin Lemnaru got a fifth for Romania, converted by Valentin Calafeteanu who then kicked a penalty.

The final whistle went, the large crowd rejoiced and fireworks went up into the cold Bucharest sky.

Romania, who have been to every World Cup so far, join Pool B with Argentina, England, Scotland and Georgia.

After the match Sorin Socol, the Romania captain, said: "Today we did the best thing which is qualification for the World Cup. We worked so hard for two years. Today we played like a real team because the forwards really dominated in the scrum and line-out and the backs scored every time they had an opportunity. "

For Carlos Arboleya, captain of Uruguay, there was no joy: "It is terrible, I feel awful, I am very sad now. Hopefully we can get to the next World Cup, we are going to work for that.

"Tonight they were the better side. They make points with the ball, they take advantage of our errors, they were better."
